Eilean Donan Castle, by the village of Dornie on the way to the Isle of Skye. Eilean Donan was the scene for the medieval fight in the movie "Highlander" from the 1980's. Sam found a crab and several jelly fish in the waters surrounding the castle on our first visit. The castle is located in the western highlands of Scotland and was originally built for the clan Mackenzie. Now owned by the Macrae clan, the castle is sometimes used for the family. I imagine this is the reason we were not allowed to photograph the interior. Still, a beautiful castle inside and out, and a wonderful piece of Scottish history! We were able to visit Eilean Donan twice, the first time was on the way to the Isle of Skye. At this time, the visitors center and ticket area were closed, so we were only able to walk over the bridge and view the outside. The second time, as we left the Isle of Skye, another guest at the B&B we stayed in (she was from Conneticut!) wanted to go with us, so we let her ride along. This time we were able to tour the inside and even see photos from the set of the movie "Highlander". The castle was founded in the 13th century, but was destroyed in the Jacobite rebellion of 1719. The Macrae clan completed their reconstruction in 1932, and that is what stands to this day.
We finally made it!
After several years of saving, and doing without, we finally got to take our "trip of a lifetime"! Thanks to my hubby for all of his hard work and planning to make this happen. We have memories that we will never forget, and stories to share for ages to come. Click on the photos tab at the top to view the photo gallery.
